Gen1 Recomp Download and Installation
Gen1 Recomp is a native recreation powered by a handwritten Lua and LÖVE2D engine rather than a traditional emulator. Download the release asset made for your operating system, extract or install it, and keep your existing user-data folder when updating.
Open the Official Release Page
Open the Gen1 Recomp releases page on GitHub and pick the newest stable build. Read the release notes first because they may include upgrade steps, known issues or required file changes.
Install on Windows
Download the Windows archive, extract the complete folder and launch the included executable. Do not run the program directly from inside the ZIP file.
Install on macOS
Download the macOS asset, extract it if needed and move the application to the Applications folder. On first launch, open it through the Finder context menu if macOS blocks it.
Install on Linux
Download the Linux build that matches your system. Extract packaged archives completely, or mark an AppImage as executable before launching it.
Install on Android
Download the APK from the official release page. Allow installation from your browser or file manager for this one install, then open Gen1 Recomp from the app launcher.
Complete the First Launch
Start Gen1 Recomp and follow the initial setup screen. The application requires game data from a legally owned Pokémon Red, Blue or Yellow ROM and does not include Nintendo game files.
Update Without Losing Saves
Close the application and back up its save and user-data folders before replacing an older build. Install the new release separately first, then reuse the existing user data according to the release instructions.
Quick Tips
- Choose a normal release instead of a source-code archive.
- Match the download asset to your operating system and processor.
- Avoid packages reposted by unrelated download websites.
- Back up saves, configuration and installed mods before a major update.
Gen1 Recomp Beginner Setup Guide
The first setup is selecting a clean ROM from a legally owned cartridge, confirming that Gen1 Recomp recognizes the game, and configuring controls, display and game speed. Complete a normal save before adding mods so you always have a working recovery point.
Prepare a Supported Game
Create a clean digital dump of a legally owned Pokémon Red, Blue or Yellow cartridge. Gen1 Recomp supplies the native engine but does not distribute copyrighted ROM data.
Import the ROM
Launch Gen1 Recomp and use the initial import prompt to locate your ROM file. Choose the matching game version and let the application process the required game data.
Verify the First Boot
Start the imported game and confirm that the opening screen, menu, audio and character movement work normally. Test the base game before enabling any mods.
Configure Controls
Open the controls menu and review the bindings for movement, confirm, cancel, Start and Select. Gen1 Recomp can be played with a keyboard or a compatible controller.
Adjust Display and Audio
Choose a window size, fullscreen mode and scaling option that keeps the image readable. Adjust music and sound levels before a longer play session.
Set the Game Speed
Use the speed controls to accelerate walking, battles or repeated actions. Return to normal speed during dialogue, scripted events or troubleshooting.
Locate and Back Up Saves
Gen1 Recomp stores save data separately from the original ROM. Use the application save-management options or user-data directory to find the active save and copy it to a backup folder.
Avoid Common Setup Mistakes
Most first-launch problems come from incomplete extraction, unsupported ROM modifications, missing application files or enabling several mods before testing the base game.
Quick Tips
- Use an unmodified ROM rather than a ROM hack.
- Keep an untouched backup outside the Gen1 Recomp folder.
- Extract the entire release package before launching.
- Confirm the unmodded game works before importing a mod collection.
Gen1 Recomp Mods and Mod Manager
Gen1 Recomp supports community modifications through its integrated Mod Manager. Keep mod archives in their expected structure, verify that each mod supports your installed Gen1 Recomp version, and test changes one at a time.
Prepare a Compatible Mod
Download a mod made specifically for Gen1 Recomp. A mod built for an emulator, a conventional ROM hack or another recompilation project is not automatically compatible.
Keep the ZIP Structure Intact
Import the original mod ZIP when the manager expects a packaged archive. Repacking a mod incorrectly can add an extra top-level folder and prevent the manager from finding its metadata.
Import Through the Mod Manager
Open the built-in Mod Manager, choose the import option and select the downloaded package. Review the detected mod name, version and compatibility information before enabling it.
Enable and Disable Mods
Use the Mod Manager toggle instead of deleting files manually. Disabling a mod preserves its package and settings while letting you test the game without its changes.
Control Load Order
When multiple mods change the same script or system, the mod loaded later may override an earlier change. Place required framework mods before the content that depends on them.
Recover From a Broken Installation
If the game stops launching, disable the newest mod first and return to a minimal configuration. Restore the last working save or user-data backup when persistent data has changed.
Gen1 Recomp Voxel Mod Setup
DramaticShape Voxel Mod is a separate community project that runs on top of Gen1 Recomp. Install and test the base application first, back up existing saves and settings, then add the voxel mod through the supported mod workflow.
Install a Compatible Gen1 Recomp Release
Download and launch the required Gen1 Recomp version before installing the voxel mod. Import Red, Blue or Yellow and confirm that the unmodded game reaches the title screen.
Download DramaticShape Voxel Mod
Obtain the mod package from the DramaticShape project repository. Use a packaged release intended for players rather than an automatically generated source-code archive.
Import the Mod
Open the Gen1 Recomp Mod Manager and import the voxel package. Enable any required dependencies before the main voxel package and restart the application.
Verify the 3D Overworld
Load a save and enter an outdoor or indoor map to confirm that the original tile-based environment is rendered as voxel geometry. Check movement, collision, map transitions and camera tracking.
Choose a Camera Mode
Use the mod camera settings to select your preferred view of Kanto, from the original top-down composition to an angled 3D presentation or a closer character-focused perspective.
Configure 3D Battles
Enable the mod battle presentation to display Pokémon encounters in a three-dimensional scene. Test wild battles and trainer battles separately because they may use different camera positions.
Optimize Performance
Voxel rendering requires more graphics processing than the standard Gen1 Recomp presentation. Reduce render distance, effects or shadows when the frame rate drops.
Try Experimental First-Person Features
Enable first-person or close-camera features only after the standard voxel view works correctly. Return to the standard camera for tight maps, scripted scenes or precise navigation.
Quick Tips
- Create a test save before adding the voxel renderer.
- Back up the current user-data and mod folders.
- Start with the standard recommended camera preset.
- Disable the voxel mod and confirm Gen1 Recomp still launches if problems appear.

Gen1 Recomp Save Editor Guide
The built-in Save Editor changes structured data inside a Gen1 Recomp save. Small edits such as moving a Pokémon or correcting an item are safer than changing many interconnected values at once, especially Pokédex records and story event flags.
Create a Backup
Close active gameplay, locate the Gen1 Recomp save directory and copy the complete save folder to a separate location. Keep the backup unchanged until the edited save loads normally.
Open the Correct Save
Launch Gen1 Recomp, enter the built-in Save Editor and select the save belonging to the intended playthrough. Confirm the trainer name, current party and progress before changing anything.
Edit Party Pokémon
Select a party slot to review the species, nickname, level, moves and stored data. Keep the party within the normal six-Pokémon limit and avoid duplicate or incomplete slot data.
Manage PC Boxes
Move, add or remove Pokémon while respecting the original Generation I box structure. Check the active box before returning to the game so newly caught Pokémon are stored correctly.
Adjust Items
Review bag and PC inventory, then change item types or quantities within the limits accepted by the editor. Keep key items and story objects consistent with completed events.
Update Pokédex Data
Edit Seen and Caught records independently when correcting Pokédex progress. A Pokémon marked as caught should also be marked as seen to keep the records consistent.
Handle Event Flags Carefully
Event flags control story progress, encounters and access to locations. Change only the specific flag needed, because unrelated changes can skip required sequences.
Save and Test the Result
Confirm the editor changes, return to the game and load the edited save. Check the party, boxes, inventory and Pokédex, then create a normal in-game save before continuing.
Recover a Save That Will Not Load
Close Gen1 Recomp, preserve the failed edited save for comparison and restore the original backup. Reopen the editor and repeat only the necessary changes with valid values.
Quick Tips
- Back up every file associated with the current profile or save slot.
- Do not edit the backup copy.
- Test the edited save before deleting any backup.
- Repeat large edits in smaller groups to identify invalid data.
Gen1 Recomp Link Play Guide
Gen1 Recomp reproduces Generation I link-play through a direct network session. One player hosts the connection, the second player joins using the host address and UDP port, and both players then use the normal Pokémon Center Cable Club options.
Gen1 Recomp Updates and Known Issues
Gen1 Recomp releases can include platform packages, core engine changes, ROM compatibility updates, Mod Manager improvements, Save Editor fixes and Link Play changes. Preserve saves and mods separately so updates can be tested without losing progress.
